California just can't get it together. But, 18,000 already married gay couples get to stay that way.
I usually am not a fan of third graders. And I hate starting a sentence with "kids these days" but thing is, kids these days seem awfully different than when I was a wee one. However, this kid is awesome.

I'm still sort of frustrated that I don't have a definite answer when random friends decide, for whatever reason, to ask if my girlfriend and I are getting married. First, it's not legal in the state we live in (Virginia) and second, it's sort of presumptious. I get that they're attempting to be progressive (or are they?) but it's still a little on the weird side.
I go back and forth from kind of liking that we can't get married, that we're not like the hetero population and that, in my mind, our relationship is much more equal and exciting than a hetero one, to thinking someday I'd like to get married, privately and then have a big fucking party afterwards and invite my parents and smile for days at their faces when they open the mail. Basically, my two issues are explained in this 30-second clip from "Queer As Folk."

I'm late on this, but if you haven't seen it, it's so worth it. Makes me glad I was a theater geek in high school. The highlight is Margaret Cho — decked in tattoos.
The newest battle waging against the Prop 8 results and other marriage amendments is the Day Without A Gay on Dec. 10. Those who are interested in participating, should call in gay to work and volunteer at a local organization. Thing is, I never even call in sick to work, so calling in gay doesn't seem to be my kind of pie, but I'm interested. Why it's a Wednesday, I have no idea. Can't it be a Friday? Hmm. Maybe I'll just have to call in gay a few times before the year is up.

We weren't able to make the Prop 8 protest, but we can live vicariously (and hopefully victoriously) through those who were able to make it. Washington Blade has a pictorial up here.

No, Connecticut is now an option for those icky spring weddings that everyone is wild about these days. From CNN:
The ruling makes Connecticut the third state, after Massachusetts and California, to decide its constitution mandates treating citizens equally when applying for marriage licenses, regardless of their sexual orientation.
"Interpreting our state constitutional provisions in accordance with firmly established equal protection principles leads inevitably to the conclusion that gay persons are entitled to marry the otherwise qualified same sex partner of their choice," the ruling said.
"To decide otherwise would require us to apply one set of constitutional principles to gay persons and another to all others. The guarantee of equal protection under the law, and our obligation to uphold that command, forbids us from doing so. In accordance with these state constitutional requirements, same sex couples cannot be denied the freedom to marry."
It's nice to see a columnist for a mostly conservative chain of papers happy about gay marriage, even though it's because she likes weddings in general. The story also delves into the differences between marriage and a domestic partnership, two semi-separate things that I can use some education on. So if you're up for reading a brisk column on the ins and outs of California's law on gay marriage, here's one point of view.
Ellen and Portia wed this Saturday in California. Yay! I've always loved weddings: the cake, the drinking, the dancing, the toasts, the DRESSES. It's a big fat excuse to make a day all about you and your honey and I hope, someday, fingers crossed, I'll get to share my big day with The Wifey. (Shh, don't tell her yet.)
