Of butchness, and how I just can't change your tire, call AAA

Once again -- and shockingly soon! -- I have searched YouTube for my favorite butch/femme search terms and I discovered this:

Listen, dude, I know your pain. I ... I can't change a tire. Is there anyone around to take away my butch card? No? I can PAY for you to have your tire changed, and I think that's something.

I think we need to discuss the question of metrosexual butches right fucking now.

AND, uh, dude who made this video? On behalf of all of our femme readers who might see this: swoon. I, you know, love femmes myself and I'm with you on the metro butch thing, but you have to be fucking kidding me, thinking that there aren't femmes who like what you are.

Own that shit, my metro brother!

Ode to the Frog

God, I love you Frog Bra.

I'll just say this: if your chest region, if you will, exceeds the maximum recommended load for sports bras and you're not a fan of, say, binding all that shit ... Frog Bra. If your below-the-shoulders-above-the-navel situation is in need of some seriously comfortable compression: fucking Frog Bra.

Frog Bra. Frog Bra. Frog Bra. Bra. Brahhhh. Bro. I can't say enough about it. I love them, I own three, I will buy more. I am a walking ad for them. I want to wear logos plastered on my chest to advertise the reduction process.

Sponsor me! It'll be like NASCAR for homos.

Reduce your situation, butches. Love the Frog.

Shear what now?

Holy christ, so I saw a commercial for a show on Bravo called "Shear Genius" ... and I dunno. Apparently it's in season two now, and is cranking up the gay.

Here's the stylist that caught my eye in the commercial:

Deeeeeeeeeeeeee! She looked a whole fuck of a lot more dykey in the commercial and just a little bit butch. But when I visited Bravo's site for the show, meh. She's very much a Joan Jett clone.

Who knows though? Maybe she'll wipe off that eyeshadow and break outta the mold, son.

Is shaggy the new fauxhawk?

My girlfriend says that it is. Since she's now been given full creative license* over my hair**, I certainly hope that she's right.

I kind of miss my fauxhawk but honestly, I had it for about 2 years. Isn't it time to let it die a quiet, dignified death?

Right now, I've got this shaggy emo thing going on. I'm practically sporting the Emo Forelock. I'm not sure if this is acceptable, but what the hell: guys do it! Tall, thin guys in skinny jeans ... but dudes nonetheless!

*Punk Rock Femme: Unlicensed hairstylist to the queer population of Richmond, Virginia!

**Within reason.

I'm a movement by myself

For the sake of argument, let's just say that you were getting pretty down on the particular gender dynamic that you've known and loved for years. Let's also say that you were kind of feeling like maybe that particular gender dynamic was, say, falling out of favor 'cause everyone's so motherfucking post-queer, post-gender at this point that we don't even have to have words to describe ourselves. We've come that far, apparently! "Hi, my name is 10xfast and I'm ____", except, I dunno, insert a hand gesture for that gender identification that isn't even necessary or even that acceptable anymore.

Butch-femme, right? In the last few years, I've felt like my gender identity and my Great Femme Search was getting a little nuts and deceptive ... oh, like I'd decided to buy a dog and had accidentally been given a wolverine instead. Everyone I was dating was looking very femme but in identity? Not so much. I was thinking of getting "Why do you have to be such a boy all the time?" printed on t-shirts after the last failed adventure in identity politics.

And, really, I didn't actually fail all the time. Sometimes I'd land The Uber Femme, the femme so femme that any failure in butchness on my part would somehow offend her. Did I cry at a movie? Minus 20 points, don't do that around her friends. Did I forget to open a door? Well, she's standing in front of it like a T-Rex whose shriveled arms and lack of opposable thumbs have made door-opening totally impossible, so OPEN THE DOOR ALREADY.

What to do with that, really? For the most part, I've been really happy with the way that I express masculinity. It's a patchwork; I can tell you where I learned every piece of it. I can also tell you what I've decided to drop, 'cause some things just weren't gonna go into the mix. I can't fix a car, for example. I won't kill your spiders: those motherfuckers are scary and beyond my control.

So what to do? I tend to put a lot of stock in the gender identity of my partners, so the queer girl who looks femme but doesn't identify isn't really my thing anymore. By the same token, the Uber Femme who has a checklist sitting in her very stylish and expensive purse that she'll use to keep track of my butch infractions ... well, that's kind of shitty, emotionally damaging and insanely ego-bruising.

I don't want to say that I was ready to give up. That'd be some trite, romantic comedy silliness right there. I think I was ready to take a break or change my tactics or to start to settle for anyone who fit the appearance bill but wasn't quite up to par on the shared interests front. At the end of the summer, I remember having an issue with The Girl Who Had An Interesting Occupation But Wasn't Actually That Interesting and telling Tres Bien that I wasn't going to chase her. "I'm done chasing," I said. And I totally said it with all of the false confidence of a 16-year-old boy.

Here's where we go into romantic comedy territory. Here is where I write a screenplay.

Enter Punk Rock Femme, Stage Left.

She rolled into my life with tattoos and an attitude and a hundred really cute headshots. She is an Alpha Femme without the demands. She makes me laugh. She loves all of the music that I love and plenty that I don't and whoa, how unusual is that? She steals my hoodies with record label logos. She knows more about the labels behind those logos than I do. She's a pusher of the right boundaries and is soft on all of the ones that I can't give up. She melts stone. She talks shit and backs it up. She does funny things to my shyness. She is so smart that sometimes I just stay quiet and listen. She has a posse. She kicks my ass in pool. She is fierce.

When we are near each other, I feel very much like a better version of me. We smolder, we click. I understand butch-femme again when she puts her arm through mine when we're walking. I get a fluttering in my chest if she uses the wrong pronoun. We match each other in a way that is perfectly gendered without being forced.

And here is where I hope that the rest of the screenplay writes itself.

Dani loses, femmes start packing bags for Florida

I'm a little late to the game with this, but Dani finally struck out on ASALWTT. She wore some guyliner, sported a rad vest/tie combo and got all teary-eyed, but it was all for naught. Somewhere in Florida at this very moment, I'm sure a group of femme girls are plotting an arson with the hope that Dani will show up to put out the fire.

Here's a fun activity: check out this article about Dani from the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. It's pretty brief, but the use of words like "bisexual" and "firefighter" means that there's surefire wingnuttery in the comments section.

Check 'em out in all o' their mouth-breathing glory:

It truly is amazing how far this country has slid into a moral abiss when a lesbian firefighter tries to win the sexual affection of a bisexual nymphomanic purely on the hedonistic desire for self-pleasure. I know most of it is just acting for the sake of cheap entertainment, but I must wonder what these shows say about our society as a whole.

HE/SHE/IT IS UGLY!!!!!!PUT IT IN A "LOCK BOX"

This is disgusting, I am putting it right out in the open, Iff this quarky firefighter shows up on the scene where I am a victim, dont let it give me mouth to mouth.I would rather pass on.

She is not a women. She is androgynous. Check her DNA.

I would be embarassed to even call myself a member of this FireFighter Batallion due to Miss or Mister Cambell(whatever she is)........and I know this is having a negative effect! Just ask the 300 pound DFB fighter that was walking around Publix(hillsboro/powerline) on Monday getting heckled worse then the Miami Dolphins!!! I personally wanted to spit on this guy, for them allowing a disgrace like this to be a part of their Batallion!

FEAKS LIKE DANI BELONG IN THE CIRCUS, NOT OUT SAVING LIVES!!!!!

ps.....UMM DIDN'T TILA USED TO BE A MAN, CAUSE THAT JAWLINE AND ADAMS APPLE IS NOOOOOOOO WOMAN'S!!!!!!

I love the internet!

My imagination is way too powerful

Punk Rock Femme and I had a conversation tonight about the Denise ("Zazu!") and Sully/Boston Teens sketches from SNL. Funny stuff, right? I mean, Rachel Dratch is so funny and was criminally underutilized on that show ...

But anyway, I had to refresh my memory, so I found one (One! These videos are rare like a unicorn, dudes!) sketch on MySpaceTV. About 30 seconds into the sketch, this thing started happening to me where I was kind of seeing Sully and Zazu as, uhm, a butch-femme couple. Right. Well, I gave you fair warning and told you that it was weird.

This is all part of an advanced technique that I'll call Imagination Christmas. It's what you have to do when you never see anyone who looks like you in films, on television or anywhere but your worn copy of Female Masculinity. It's also what happens when you almost never see couples who represent the relationships that you want in those same places.

I learned the art of Imagination Christmas from a girl I used to date. We went out to a bar with a femme friend of hers, and they spent the first 30 minutes we were there working their flirtation game on the (straight. male.) bartender. And then, miraculously, free drinks! For them. I still had to pay.

Conversation followed:

Me: Are you flirting with him? I mean, I'm standing right here ...
Her: Yeah, but I'm pretending that he's a hot butch.
Me: Ok, but I'm standing right here!
Her: Well, there aren't enough butches in this city, so we have to use our imaginations.

And thus, Imagination Christmas was born! Later, The Girl Who Invented Imagination Christmas used her superpower to play a wicked game of pretend while making out with straight guys. Then she used it to actually start sleeping with them. Right now, I would say that she's using it to go a happy place where she's the radical documentary filmmaker that she wanted to be instead of, you know, being married to a dude, having two kids and living in rural Texas.

Imagination Christmas is a powerful thing! Use it wisely, Padawan.

A shot at a lap dance with Tila Tequila

Just based on the previews, this is the episode I've been waiting for ... and it was mostly disappointing, much like the last episode. Still, queer visibility for the win!

Tila headed home with the four remaining deluded nutbags, and I learned that even reality show contestants have semi-normal families.

Amanda:

- is an Amazon who towers approximately 800 feet above everything, including small buildings.

- has a surprisingly sweet mom and dad who managed to brush off all of the "I'm SO gonna shock you" stuff that Tila did.

- lives on beachfront property and has some kind of shady, drug-addicted past. Shocker.

Ryan:

- is a douchebag with matching douchebag friends and douchebag car.

- has an uber-conservative, WASP family who didn't really seem to take well to the whole "bisexual girlfriend" news.

- has a kind of hot sister.

Bobby:

- inexplicably lives in rural, upstate New York.

- has a bitch mother.

- is probably going to win, despite both of those giant effing strikes against him.

Dani:

- is the proud granddaughter of possibly the raddest grandma EVER, who not only accepted a lap dance from Tila, but shed a few tears o' love over her really cool grandkid.

- has firehouse co-workers that are protective and sweet.

- breaks out what looks like a modified version of one those WNBA draft suits in the preview for the next episode. You know what I'm talking about? It's the open-necked shirt under the suit jacket that says, "Hi there! I'm on television getting drafted for a career in which I'll probably make about 35, 000 bucks a year. On ESPN! How much money do you make? Really? God, I probably could make more than that doing the thing that I could do with my degree. Anyway ... despite the fact that you've never seen me wearing anything but warmups, having my hair in any style but a ponytail or braids, or doing anything but slapping asses and being kind of butch, I'm still a straight, straight woman! The WNBA probably made me wear this so that I seem like a non-threatening sexual entity, but damn if I don't like looking like a dude in drag. Also, have you seen how much money we make when we play outside of the U.S.? "

So, someone gets sent home! Would you be surprised to learn that it's Ryan? Nah, didn't think so.

Next week: Mexico! WNBA suits! I'm not sure what else!

Bonus: This week's episode was filled with little awesome clips of M.I.A. in between commercials and such. Much better than last week's Alicia Keys-fest.

Don't make me hate you, bro

AfterEllen has an new interview with Dani from ASALWTT, and I'm having trouble maintaining the same level of dude-dude respect that I once had for her.

For one, she's still on the "futch" tip:

AE: You've described yourself as "futch" with an F. What does that mean?
DC: It's kind of a cross between a femme and a butch. I'm not femmey by any means, and I don't like to consider myself butch either. I've seen the extreme on both ends, and I feel like I'm somewhere in the middle there, so I put the two words together and called it "futch." I mean, I'm not claiming ownership of that word, but I guess since I've been on the show, it's like my term now. [laughs]

And she follows that up with this:

AE: So you think butches are rough?
DC: Yes, I've seen some butches where it's like [whistles]. "How many flannel shirts do you have in the closet?" You know, maybe not flannel so much anymore, but you know, Timberland shoes. I'm not trying to generalize, but I've just seen some rough butch girls. Like, whoa, I'm not f---ing with her. [laughs]

Hmmph. Dead to me.

In which Dlisted says the thing that I've been thinking forever

Ok, so Dlisted doesn't say the exact thing I've been thinking. I've been thinking that Zac Efron looks like a pretty butch, which: close!

Six of one, half a dozen of the other. Or something. Right?

A shot at love with Dani, who just keeps getting more butch

She's even butch in a bikini. Yeah, I said it: she rocks a bikini top in the latest ep, and she manages to butch that up admirably.

Nothing too special in episode 7 ("Now featuring 20 percent more boring!"). All you need to know is that Manly Stanley makes it on to the next round, where Tila will go home with all of the remaining contestants to meet their families.

On a related note, I have to say that Manly is losing her smooth game. She tells Tila that she will win some kind of pimp award if she gets to bring Tila back to the firehouse. Nice one, Dani. When I'm charming potential mates, the first thing that comes to mind is to tell them that my friends will think I've got my pimp game tight when they see you. I tell my friends that privately, thankyouverymuch.

On to episode 8 and the surefire elimination of America's butchest reality show contestant ever!

11.14.2007

Tila, Tila, Tila

Dani, Dani, Dani.

My final thoughts this week about Dani and A Shot at Love ... go like this:

- Dani is jacked
- Dani is built like a brick wall
- Should Dani ever retire from the firefighting gig, Dani should become a bouncer. Kid has broken up more fights on that show than the guys who are paid to break up fights on that show.
- Dani is motherfucking huge
- Dani apparently spends 16 hours a day lifting cinder blocks and drinking protein shakes
- I'm obsessed with how jacked Dani is. Has she actually gotten more jacked since the beginning of the show? What is with those arms? Am I secretly attracted to her? What the FUCK?

Jesus. I mean, I realize that I watched the most recent episode of ASALWTT knowing that I was going to pay attention to all things Dani, but has there ever been a saner, sweeter reality show contestant? She's pretty much the only one who hasn't declared insane, will-kill-for-you love for a woman she's know for all of 10 seconds. Actually ... never ye mind. That's a fucking terrible standard to use to judge sanity.

At any rate, Dani is jacked. I'm done.

Jacked!

11.12.2007

Hot. Butch. Action.

If you have that weird aversion to reality shows that a ton of folks seem to have, then I have a present for you. Via the magic of the internets and YouTube, you too can watch Manly Stanley Dani and Tila Tequila have a dirty make out session.

(An aside: did you know that there's a wiki article out there that will give you the deets on how to make out with a girl? I should absolutely refer to this again in the future, especially for wise tips like this: "Hold her like a baby. Some women are fragile and like to be handled accordingly." Advice! Written! By! People! Who! Have! Never! Touched! A! Girl!)

If you want to avoid the rest of the show and get right to the Dani, shoot forward to 2:55-ish. Bonus tough kid Dani material can be found at 7:10, where Mr. Butch swings in to break up a fight between two of the chicks on the show.

You're welcome.

The arched eyebrow on the butch in panel 2 is my absolute favorite.

A shot at butch love

So, there's this show ... maybe you've heard of it? A Shot at Love with Tila Tequila is pretty much rocking the socks of every femme I know because of that foxy Manly Stanley, Dani.

Have you seen Dani? Look:

Manly. Stanley. "Futch", my ass! And a firefighter, too! Ladies, you may commence with the swooning right fucking now.

If you know me, you know that I have a thing about getting ranty about butch representation. If you don't know me, now you know: I get ridiculous over the lack of butches in queer pop culture (or, you know, in real fucking life). So, when A Shot at Love with Tila Tequila airs (as it did two nights ago), I Get Phone Calls (tm).

Oh, Dani: ye of the dorky interactions with Tila, the dimples, the butching of the femme gear they try to put you in and the ... well, the firefighter thing. My femme friends thing you're the hottest thing since Jack Halberstam, and my butch friends and I kind of hate you a little bit for the reaction you create in the femmes.

I hope you win, you charming bastard. God knows we need a little futch up in MTV, since we're certainly not getting it anywhere else.

Dear God, dude ...

I just looked at some comments about Dani on BuddyTV.
A selection:

I have never been with a woman but if i ever got a chance to be with dani i would totally take it. She is so sexy and just watching her on the show makes me hot! Dani..... wanna be my first woman?????

I am married with 2 children, I have been with women before but I have now settled with a man. However, I am really into Dani, she is so humble, so real, so beautiful and I wish I could spend some alone time with her and kiss her on her beautiful lips. If there is a way to email her please let me know...

OKAY IN ALL SERIOUSNESS. IM STRAIGHT, AND I GOTTA BOYFRIEND. BUT DANI IS !@#!@iiN SEXY. SHELL MAKE A GIRL WANNA GO HOMO. SO SERIOUS.

For REALS, girls: keep it in your pants. Although, having looked at Dani's MySpace, I have to say that I might have to start liking butches. And being less butch. Fuck, that boi is getting some play!

10.07.2007

Yeah ... gender?

Possible butch gender violation: I just got a t-shirt with writing on it in silver ... glitter.

It's not that kind of glitter, dammit. But it's sparkly enough that my housemate informed that it looks like a shirt from a low-rent strip club.

Thanks, I <3 Brooklyn Girls. I wanted to show off my appreciation for queer femmes, not actually become one of them by accident.

It'snotthatbad, it'snotthatbad. Whew.
